Les Paul Guitars Auction Description: 1996 Gibson Custom Shop Les PaulExcellent Collector ConditionDamn this thing is cool! The Custom Shop really delivered on this one. Kind of a cross between a "Standard" and a "Custom" with wicked-sweet retro styling that is perfect in the full range from oldies rock-n-roll to modern pop-punk! Everybody says they wanna be different and unique, but they all seem to walk out of the music store with yet another burst or another black guitar! There will be no lack of "standing out" if you are playing this one! If you are familiar with the "Catalina" line from the late 90s, this is similar but has a regular solid body and a normal Les Paul script headstock (instead of that awful short-lived custom shop circle logo). Mahogany body, mahogany neck with a slightly reduced width, ebony fretboard with trapezoid pearl inlays, bound "Standard" headstock, kluson-style tuners, special pearloid pickguard and truss-rod cover, early Classic '57 PAFs (sweet), white trim and a seriously rare color for a Gibson! Ever seen one like it?The guitar is in excellent condition. There is a small scratch on the back and a small finish chip on the underside of the headstock (see pics) and a few other extremely extremely minor imperfections here and there that you may see if you give it your all to find them (that I only mention as a formality) - certainly nothing I could photograph. Seriously, the finish is in astonishing condition and like-new glossy. There are a few places where checking has started (hairline cracking in the finish), some around the screws on the tuners and pickups, with the largest being off the top of the rhythm pickup that I tried to show in the pics. This is not damage but rather an age-related artifact that lots of people pay lots of money to have Tom Murphy fake! The hardware is in great shape as well with a touch of that retro-desirable nickel patina forming (I always wipe down the hardware after use). It has been part of a large collection so the frets have seen very little play time and have no noticeable fret-wear to mention. Never gigged, always cased when not in use and at that - rarely played... and it shows!The neck is sweet and has a comfortable medium thickness, right in the middle but a little closer to 50's rounded than 60's slim. The width at the nut of the neck is just a tad smaller than a standard LP (about 1/16"). Ironically, it came from the Custom Shop with a standard-cut nut so the high-E string would fall off the fretboard edge during play. A new nut with proper spacing has been installed to alleviate this problem (I included a comparison pic with the original nut - you can't miss how close to the edge the original setup was - had to be changed). As far as TONE: 14 year old wood baby! This one has that sweet thick LP sound but with a little bit of a nice, tight snap to it. Great tight rhythms and very fast and responsive for solo work. ....and the older Classic '57s PAFs sound excellent!Auction includes custom shop case (and key) and the original nut.This is an extremely cool Les Paul that you won't see another like, especially in this condition, in long long time!
