Les Paul Guitars Auction: 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom Gold Top RARE Model

1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom Gold Top RARE Model Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: Up for auction is a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom Gold Top in great condition. This Deluxe has some very interesting factory original customizations, making me think it was a Gibson employee guitar. The neck and body are bound in Brasilian rosewood (which i have never seen, usually they are all plastic) and the tuners are factory installed Grovers instead of the Klusons which normally should have come with the instrument. In addition, it has first fret custom inlay either added at build time or sometime in the 70s. The person I bought the guitar from had it since 78 and says that the inlay was there from the time he got it. It's got the normal wear and finish checking of a 36 year old instrument, but it's a spectacular player and sounds great. It comes with the hard case shown. I'm not sure if this is the original case for it, but it does have the same wear as you would see from a case from the same age as the guitar. I'm not positive but it think the bridge may have been replaced, it does not seem to have the original age of the rest of the hardware. If anyone has any information about the rosewood binding or the inlay on the first fret please let me know. The experts i have had look at it have all been extremely intrigued, and as Gibson had little to no records from this period it is almost impossible find any info on it.I am not a Gibson expert, but i will try to answer any questions you might have. I am starting this auction at .99 cents so bid freely and bid often :)$50.00 Shipping.Paypal OnlyInsurance will be required as well as delivery confirmation.Shipping either be by USPS or UPSInternational bidders please contact me for a shipping quote and please include your shipping code. On Nov-28-10 at 18:28:06 PST, seller added the following information:It seems to be agreed from my own observastions and those comments from the Ebay community that this guitar has been refinished. I was finally able to locate the serial number on the back of the headstock ( 50988) and the made in USA stamp. Both were filled and finished over so they are very hard to see. It is very difficult to tell if the finish was done back in the 70's or if was done more recently and reliced. It is also agreed that the rosewood binding and the inlay were most likely not done from the factory, and probably done from the original owner. I was told that the grover tuners were common to be used in this period. I know very little about Gibson guitars, i am more of a Fender guy myself. So you probably know as much or more than i do about it.I am having a professional appraisal done on Monday to determine everything i can about it as well as value. My goal here is to sell a beautiful vintage Gibson, so i want to potential bidders to have as much info as i can give you.Thanks.On Nov-29-10 at 17:51:52 PST, seller added the following information:Attention!!!OK.So I had a professional appraisal done today to eliminate some of the questions i had about this guitar. Here are the results.First of all the serial number dictates that it is actually a 1962 ish Gibson Deluxe ( NOT Custom), Thats the good news. The bad news for the collectors out there is that all the hardware and electronics ( pots, pickups, covers, knobs, truss rod cover, etc.) have all been replaced at some point. So, along with the refinishing aspect, and the replaced binding, the only thing original to this guitar is the guitar itself. That being said, it is still a 1962 ish Gibson Les Paul Deluxe that plays and sounds amazing.I have some thinking to do, i might remove the listing in a couple of days. Let me know what you think.Thanks.On Nov-29-10 at 21:49:25 PST, seller added the following information:Last Revision. At this time i believe this to be an early 60's to early 70's Gibson Deluxe. It has been refinished, rebound, and had pretty much everything replaced at some point or another. It is as some have put it, a "players guitar"And thats the last word i have on it.:)

Les Paul Guitars Auction: 2010 Gibson 59 Les Paul Historic Sierra Sunset VOS

2010 Gibson 59 Les Paul Historic Sierra Sunset VOS Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: Well, how about an Ole Fashion Auction! Starting bid $1 and NO RESERVE. Holidays are upon us so lets have a BLAST!OK, this is an AS NEW 2010 Gibson Historic 1959 Les Paul in GORGEOUS very rare (maybe even an experimental run by Gibson) color called Sierraburst, or Sierra sunset burst, etc. To me it is just a shade darker than an Iceteaburst. Either way, it is very cool and VOS finish. Also it weighs 9 LBS!. Has the tags, certificate, case. The flametop is great because it is NOT the traditional ribbon flame, but instead a curly quilty flame, looks like real 1959 top!Online stores and retail shops charge $5699 to $5999 and their tops are no where near as nice as this oneWill be shipped in the original Gibson box with serial number. Fixed UPS ground shipping of $45 in continental USA. Other locations pay based on final destination and service requested. International bidder REMEMBER shipping is very expensive. I usually use USPS Global Express which hits around $170 except AUstralia where I use FedEx which runs about $275. However, some countries have size restrictions which the guitar box exceeds, so the Airmail Prioity service is next to use, but it takes longer, but is cheaper. Also, some countries have limited insurance by USPS (like max of $500 or $650), so be aware of the details. Thanks.

Les Paul Guitars Auction: Gibson Limited Edition Goldtop Les Paul Traditional Pro

Gibson Limited Edition Goldtop Les Paul Traditional Pro Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: This item is being re-listed due to a non-paying bidder...so I'm putting it up for auction this time starting at $1 with no reserve!  It's a Les Paul Feeding Frenzy.  But beware, if you have a zero feedback rating or any negatives I may cancel your bid unless you contact me first.Full Photo Gallery Available at:  Trad Pro Photos  Gibson Les Paul Standard Tradition Pro Model.  Limited Edition Goldtop no longer available!  All Original (I did put Dunlop strap locks on but the original Gibson strap buttons will be put back on).  Condition is as new; I am the original purchaser, only played a few times.  No repairs or issues, no fret wear, a great playing and looking guitar.  Original hardshell case (also in pristine condition), Gibson owner manual, warranty info and check list is all included.  Warranty has not been registered with Gibson.  Why am I selling? Got "GAS" for a Taylor BTO. Traditional Pro Features include:  57 Classic in the neck, Burstbucker 3 in the bridge.  Volume controls pop up for coil splitting.  Tune-a-matic Nashville Bridge.  Locking tuners, Slimmer 60's profile neck.  Classic woods include a mahogany body with maple top, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard.  Classic trapezoid inlays. This instrument has a full Plek setup, just incredible to play.  For those obsessed with weight it is a very comfortable 8 lbs, 11oz, this guitar is not weight relieved.  Heavy enough for good sustain and classic Les Paul sound but light enough to wear all night. Here's a link to this models Gibson web page:Gibson.comTradPro  PayPal is preferred and expected within 24 hours of the auction ending, Buyer pays for shipping and insurance and I will ship within 24 hours of your payment clearing.  International bidders are welcome but contact me first. I am not a dealer, just a guy selling a guitar.  Item is guaranteed to be as described, check my perfect feedback and bid with confidence.  Please feel free to ask any questions, I will answer as soon as possible, thanks for looking and good luck!On Nov-16-10 at 09:07:46 PST, seller added the following information:4 NEW photos added!  I just had a question about the Serial # so I pulled out the guitar and noticed a few things I'd like to point out. This guitar was never gigged so there's no buckle rash.  it was only played at home and is in the exact same condition as when I bought it.  That being said I found 2 small nicks-  in an effort of full disclosure I've posted photos of them.  One is on the underside of the headstock by the 2nd string tuner, it is not visible from the front, only if you turn the guitar upside down.  The other is is under the bridge on the treble side.  At first look, I thought someone might have used pliers to adjust the thumb wheel and slipped off causing the indentation but I used a magnifying glass and the thumb wheel shows  no signs of marring. So these imperfections either happened at Guitar Center or that's the way it left Gibson.  They are very minor and even I didn't notice until I looked closer.  The camera makes them look worse than they actually are.  Any other specs you see are either dust particles or light reflections.  Thanks and my apologies for this oversight, I want the winning bidder to know exactly what you're getting with no worries!

Les Paul Guitars Auction: 1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst Original HS Case

1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst Original HS Case Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: This is one of the best Les Pauls I have ever played and the beautiful Sunburst speaks for itself. This guitar has it all...looks, and of course, with Tim Shaw pickups its got the best pickups Gibson has ever used in their guitars.I read an article once that said Tim Shaw was asked how many windings he used on these pickups and the aswer was "Until they were full". He also reproduced the PAF pickups in the early 80's. This guitar has some places where the finish has come off on the back of the neck and around the headstock (which is shown in the pictures) also some around the edges but this is expected on a guitar thats right at 30 years old. The neck is between a 50s and a 60s, not too fat, not too thin. It has that full 10lb body. Comes with original case...outside of case is in rough shape on the edges and bottom but the inside is perfect.Insurance will be included with shipping. Please pay for guitar immediately if you choose to BUY IT NOW (I will refund the shipping cost to Buy it Now buyers!). I will ship it within 2 days of receiving confirmed payment. Shipping to lower 48 states. Money back guarantee within 3 days, buyer pays return shipping with insurance. Must be returned in exact same shape as received. Les Paul Guitars Auction: 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus top w/case &candy!!

2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus top w/case &candy!! Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard Plus Top Heritage Cherry Sunburst Guitar with Gibson USA Hard Case and candy!!! True one cent/ No Reserve Auction on my baby...Bid with confidence- this is a Mint Condition guitarThe flames and sound are Amazing!!!!Improving a legend isn't easy, but it has happened. Introducing the 2008 Les Paul Standard from Gibson USA"an elegant revision of a true classic, with several upgrades and new features that make this new model the best Les Paul Standard ever produced. Based on research from consumer feedback and a drive to uphold and enhance the legacy of the Les Paul, Gibson USA's 2008 Les Paul Standard sets a musical instrument benchmark for excellence and achievement, beginning with a new asymmetrical neck profile that makes it one of the most comfortable and playable necks ever offered on any guitar. The neck also features an enlarged neck tenon for maximum wood contact between the neck and body. Locking Grover tuners are also a first for the Les Paul, giving the 2008 Standard an improved gear ratio of 18:1 and making string changes a snap. All newly designed controls, including custom-made, gold-plated potentiometers made by Bourns, one of the industry's leading makers of guitar electronics, give the 2008 Standard a new level of sonic clarity and intensity. It's also one of the first Gibson USA models to utilize the revolutionary Plek system"a computer-controlled setup that carefully measures and dresses each fret, accurately measuring the height between the fingerboard and each string, virtually eliminating string buzz and providing unbeatable playability. A set of Gibson's traditional Burstbucker Pro humbuckers help deliver the powerful punch expected from a Les Paul, featuring Alnico V magnets with slightly higher output and a more open sound, faithfully capturing the magic of Gibson's legendary PAF pickups of the 1950s. A chambered mahogany body gives the 2008 Standard enhanced resonance, and a plain or flame maple top pays homage to the Les Pauls of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Other new features include TonePros' locking Nashville Tune-o-matic and stopbar tailpiece in chrome finish and strap lock buttons. Each 2008 Les Paul Standard comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case. Play the new 2008 Les Paul Standard from Gibson USA and experience the evolution of the greatest electric guitar of all time. The Les Paul Traditional features a carved maple top, non-chambered, weight-relieved mahogany body and a mahogany neck with a comfortable '50s rounded shape. It's loaded with '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus humbuckers for maximum tone and ample output. Classic tone, time-tested tonewoodsTaking design and visual cues from the Les Pauls of the '80s, the Les Paul Traditional starts with an un-chambered mahogany body with traditional weight-relief holes for a beefy tone that maintains the resonance of modern Les Pauls. The body is capped with a carved maple top and the hand fitted neck tenon sports the rounded, C-shape profile common on the Les Pauls of the '80s and '90s. Plek system setupThe Les Paul Traditional is Gibson USA's first model to utilize the revolutionary Plek system - a computer-controlled set-up that carefully measures and dresses each fret, accurately measuring the height between the fingerboard and each string, virtually eliminating string buzz and providing unbeatable playability. Powerful, punchy pickupsTwo of Gibson's best-loved humbuckers - a '57 Classic in the neck position, and a '57 Classic Plus in the bridge - give the Traditional the power, punch, and clarity of Gibson's legendary PAF pickups. Other traditional appointments include vintage-style Gibson speed knobs, classic Kluson-style tuners by TonePros, which offer period-correct looks with a higher tuning ratio, and a chrome Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar. This Les Paul Traditional also comes with Gibson USA's standard black snakeskin case. Les Paul Guitars Auction: 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop W/OHSC No Reserve

2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop W/OHSC No Reserve Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: Andrewabr Store For sale is a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop with original Gibson hardshell case. Still gotta love the classics right? Nothing beats the looks and tone of a USA Les Paul and this one smokes. These new burstbuckers that the factory installs in the Standards are one of the best passive humbuckers right now. That bridge just rips through the mix with crisp/clear tone and make the most basic power chord sound really full. I don't use my neck pick up all that much but I had a blast testing it out and going through all my old jazz riffs. It has that nice rounded mids and lows with no muddiness at all. I broke out my old Rat pedal to see how it would handle that and to my surprise the tone stayed nice and strong. It sounded pretty close to that super distorted Dinosaur Jr. when I really cranked it, but use that neck pup and back down the gain and you get a much more classic Who type feel. This is not chambered so expect that big Gibson sustain.Condition is excellent. A solid 8 - 9 out of 10 because I can make out 2 tiny dings on the front, back has some buckle rash, and the bottom of the binding needs a good buffing to get out some small black marks. I was able to most of it off with just some basic guitar cleaner so it should not be an issue. Tuners are excellent, rosewood board is clean, frets have almost no wear, and neck is straight.I will ship worldwide but please make sure the country you reside in will accept a box that is 46",19",7". Please be able to pay within 48 hours after the auction finishes. To see my entire inventory of guitars at the lowest prices do a google search for recyclerock guitars. Make sure to check out my other auctions for the week. Buyers are responsible for any custom fees if any arise. If the bidding goes over 1,500, buyers anywhere outside the US/Canada must use USPS Global Express for shipping.

Les Paul Guitars Auction: 1983 Gibson Les Paul Spotlight Special ASB Ultra Rare

1983 Gibson Les Paul Spotlight Special ASB Ultra Rare Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: Andrewabr Store For sale is one of the rarest Les Paul's on the planet, the 1983 Gibson Spotlight Special with the Gibson hardshell case. Gibson only made 211 of these and you are looking at number 207. This one appears to be all original and in excellent working order. I did speak to Gibson about this guitar and they verified with the "Custom Shop Edition" logo on the back of the headstock they were sure this was an authentic one. The main attraction on this guitar is that amazing highly flamed maple top with the strip of walnut running down the middle. The finish is close to a dark tobacco and the book match is one of the best I have seen on any Gibson. The back of the body has some nice wood grain as well.If you are thinking of getting a new reissue that will set you back 5k and don't even come close to replicating the magic the Gibson guys were able to create with the 211 that they did back in 1983. The back of the neck does not have that super thick overcoat which has been my only complaint on newer Les Pauls. All of the parts seem to match up with what originally was supposed to come on the guitar. It has the blank truss rod cover, black veneer cap headstock, really well done trapezoid pearl inlays, cream pick guard, and gold hardware. Check out the double ringed original tuners, and this one was lucky enough to be made with a one piece neck. Also people have been emailing me saying that the two pieces of wood besides the walnut strip are actual 1957 pieces of wood that they had left over in the factory. I have not been able to confirm this by Gibson. The bridge and stop tail have no markings on them. The pots look original and date to 83. The pick ups are stamped with " Pat No. 2737.842" and the bridge pick up has an ink stamp of 3731183. The neck has 3721183, which makes me believe these are the Tim Shaw pick ups. If you check out the pictures of the front of the body, you can see two tiny stickers on the pick ups rings. Those are the Pat Applied For stickers that the previous owner for some reason stuck on the rings. I am going to leave it as is so the new owner can try to save them and place them back on the pick ups. You can see this one has a some wear. The bridge pick up lost some of its finish, front is clean with some minor scratches and dings, and the back has buckle rash as well as some tiny dings. For a guitar that is going to turn 30 very soon, it looks great and plays even better. The pick ups seems a bit hotter than the stock pups that come on standards but with big bright tone. An awesome collector piece that is going to be in the vintage market within 3 years!International buyers must first contact me if they are interested. To check out my entire inventory google recyclerock. I will ship worldwide but please make sure the country you reside in will accept a box that is 46",19",7". Also for international buyers I will only ship this via Global Express mail.

Les Paul Guitars Auction: 1986 Gibson Les Paul Custom Flamed Wine Red w/ OHSC

1986 Gibson Les Paul Custom Flamed Wine Red w/ OHSC Le Paul Guitar Auction Description: 1986 Gibson Les Paul Custom Flamed Wine Red with Original Gibson "Chainsaw" CaseGuitar is in very good condition and a beautiful example of a nicely flamed wine red mid-80's Les Paul. About an 8.5 to 9 out of 10 in the condition department.Cosmetic Issues. 1 ding on the neck as shown in picture 9, a couple of dings on the top (don't know if you can see them in Picture 3, but that's the area, nothing huge though) and a little bit of fret burn (rust?) on the fretwire on one of the upper frets (17th?). Also, can see lines around the diamond inlays on headstock, but not a big deal. The original owner also replaced the original pickups with some 1980's Seymour Duncan pickups, the neck one says Sey J on a sticker and the bridge pickup says DD J on it, which I believe means they are mid to late 80's Duncan Distortions, but not sure.I don't know if this guitar would be categorized as a Norton Gibson or part of the later company.Sounds great, plays great, just a great guitar all the way around!Own this great guitar and rock out like your favorite 80's shredders!!!! (Randy Rhoads, Yngwie, etc.)Compare this guitar's flame to any of the other Wine Red Flame Customs currently on Ebay, I'd say she holds her own or is better looking than most!!! (Just one man's opinion folks....)Will be packed carefully and shipped fully insured, just in case. Thanks for Looking and Good Luck!!!

Guitar legends such as Duane Allman, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Billy Gibbons, to name only a few, have forged their musical pathways utilizing the incredible tonal characteristics and playability created by the artistry of the Gibson Les Paul Standard. As an icon throughout the music industry, not only has this guitar become a legend, it has attained the highest most acclaimed value in quality and investment.Even more rare and incredible is this 2007 Gibson Historic 1960 Reissue Les Paul Chambered. It is one of only 15 built in 2007 for a worldwide market. This 1960 Chambered Les Paul is all about the woods. This is the good wood... chambered for better sustain and more tone. BIG, FAT TONE with a HUGE midrange HONK and sweet treble! This guitar has incredible sustain and range with just awesome power... Pure LP sound and absolute soul, with that to die for "woody air." With less weight the acoustic resonance is greater. This guitar is everything a Les Paul ought to be... beautiful, soulful, powerful and stronger than any. It's this kind of raw wood, "the good wood" that captured the mojo of the legendary Les Paul Standard! Found in less than 1 in 1,000 trees, this kind of Flame Maple is very hard in texture and reflective, capturing stress between the flames of grain and producing a loud, powerful projective sound. The frets are nice and large, for wider bends. The feel of the neck is just like it ought to be...slim and fast with an incredibly comfortable feel. This guitar weighs 7 lbs 4.5 oz! She's so light on your back that you can play it all night long and you'll be sounding so good you won't want to put it down!In 2006 the Gibson Custom Shop proudly introduced the Vintage Original Spec series of historic solid body guitars. The Vintage Original Spec (VOS) series is the latest step on Gibson's journey toward perfection. When you pick up a VOS guitar, you will experience the culmination of more than 20 years of effort to give you the look, feel, and sound of a $300,000 original. They started with playability and their revolutionary process ensures precise fret work and a perfectly cut nut on every guitar. Frets are leveled, shaped, and crowned to exacting specifications - unique to each individual instrument - and will extend a bit further towards the binding, giving you more surface area. The nut is carefully hand-shaped to give it a more rounded, vintage look. The feel of the neck is just like it ought to be. With a rolled fingerboard binding, you will experience an incredibly comfortable feel. Using a proprietary process that includes unique steps for staining, wet-sanding, and hand-rubbing gives the guitar the look and feel of a well cared for 50-year-old Standard. The hardware also goes through a new proprietary process, giving it the look you'd expect to see after decades of natural oxidation. And finally, the edges of the neck heel and peghead are softened, lending the guitar a gently worn-in appearance and comfort. You will experience an instrument that faithfully recreates the most sought-after classics - down to the smallest details.Features include: 1-piece, solid mahogany back Historically accurate neck tenon for superior sustain Bumblebee capacitors Historically accurate reproductions of original PAF humbuckers Tortoise dot markers on the side of the neck ABR-1 bridge and lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece Holly headstock veneer Period-correct stain and filler 100% nitro-cellulose lacquer finishe with no added plasticizers Ice Tea finishThis guitar is ALL ORIGINAL, 100% MINT, a collectors prize and a players dream. Frets have barely any wear, lots of sustain from the 496R and 500T ceramic pickups, strings set low to the fretboard, no fret buzz, fast, comfortatble, slim-tapered neck. Original stap buttons will be placed back on and original case included. The ONLY reason I'm selling is because I'm freeing up some cash for a Martin acoustic I really want. It's not. It's a 2000. eBay's site won't allow for a modification of the title, so I'm bringing it to your attention here. BTW the finish is called translucent amber. So, this is a 2000 Gibson Les Paul Classic 1960 Reissue with slim taper neck and high-gain ceramic pickups in translucent amber finish. Only 300 made! - instant kharma collector's item.John Lennon was always a fan of Charlie Christian, and he also enjoyed tinkering with his guitars. So when he met New York luthier and guitar repairman Ron DeMarino in the early '70s, he asked him to take his 1950s Tobacco Sunburst Les Paul Junior and add the pickup made famous by the jazz legend. Later, at Lennon's request, DeMarino sanded off the 'burst finish and added the Tuno-O-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece. On August 30, 1972, Lennon used his customized Les Paul in its new, raw wood state during his famous benefit concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.Today, the guitar is on permanent display at the John Lennon Museum in Japan. Histroy of The John Lennon Les Paul JuniorBy Andy Babiuk, author of the bookJohn Lennon"a name known worldwide as an icon, musician, and poet, the voice of a generation, and without a doubt, one of the most important and influential figures in rock 'n' roll history. It was John Lennon and the Beatles that forever changed the world of music and pop culture. As with all great musicians, the tools of the Beatles' trade at times became as important as their music. The instruments they chose helped to reflect their thoughts, ideas, and even lifestyles. The everlasting images of Lennon"with his Gibson J"160E guitar during the height of Beatlemania, or his Epiphone Casino on the rooftop of the Beatles' Apple headquarters, or his modified Gibson Les Paul Jr. at his famous 1972 Madison Square Garden concert"have all left a lasting impression on our minds. John Lennon is so closely associated with these instruments that the instruments themselves have become extensions of Lennon's personality.Lennon solo After the break"up of the Beatles, the prolific John Lennon immediately embarked on his successful solo career, recording and collaborating with wife Yoko Ono. It was during this time, in the early '70s, that John Lennon expressed his passion for New York City. "It's the greatest place on earth," he said. "I love the place 'cause this is where the music came from; this is what influenced my whole life."Soon after, on September 3, 1971, the Lennons left the U. K. for New York, never to return. Lennon enjoyed New York's artistic environment. "There are these fantastic 20 or 30 artists who all understand what I'm doing and have the same kind of mind as me," he said. "It's like heaven."Enter Ron DeMarino Ron DeMarino, a New York luthier known for his guitar repair and restoration work, met the Lennons in late 1971. "I was at one of the guitar shops on 48th Street and overheard a guy who was looking for an old vintage amp for a friend," DeMarino recalls. "The store didn't have that style of amp, but I did, so when the guy left the shop I told him that I had one to sell. He told me that it was for John Lennon, and I of course didn't believe him. The guy introduced himself as Claude and said he worked for Lennon. He gave me his phone number and asked me if I was really interested in selling the amp to call him. So I got back to my shop and gave Claude a call. Sure enough, after making some arrangements, I found out that the amp was indeed for John Lennon."That's when I got to know John, when he was still on Bank Street. It was around the time he was working with Elephant's Memory, and he was hanging around with their guitarist Wayne Gabriel, who they use to call Tex. They found out that my business was restoration work on guitars, so they had me start going through the many guitars that had to be worked on. I had worked my way into being sort of a confidant, in a good position with them. I was very straightforward; I was not ga"ga being around John or Yoko, so I guess they kind of liked that. I stayed doing work for them for a while. It was kind of a relaxed environment. There was never any stress or forced attitudes so anything that John told me was candid and truthful."DeMarino's relationship with John Lennon continued to grow. "I started advising John on certain sales of guitars, just sort of advising him before any purchases were made as to whether it was a good purchase or not, that type of thing," he says. "This was on vintage guitars, because a lot of times guys were trying to hock stuff to them. There were a number of very questionable pieces that I negated the sale on. I remember one time I helped John find a Cherry Les Paul Junior for his son Julian. There was a lot of stuff like that."Working Classics Hero DeMarino worked on many of Lennon's guitars and made modifications to them, too. "I would meet John at the record plant, or John used to go down to Butterfly Studios"that's where he used to rehearse," DeMarino says. "It was a building off of 10th Street, by the West Side Highway, four blocks from their apartment. It was a plain building in an industrial area, but inside there was a loading dock, and they had a big rehearsal studio in there. They were building a recording studio and a mobile recording studio in the back of a bread truck. So I used to get a call, and they would say, 'John wants you to meet him at Butterfly at 10 p.m.' I would meet him and he would give me his guitars to work on. We worked on so many of his guitars."Les Paul plus Charlie Christian One of the guitars Ron DeMarino was given to work on was a 1950s Gibson single"cutaway Tobacco Sunburst Les Paul Junior. "I found out by sheer exposure, and by working on his instruments, that John messed around with his guitars a lot," says DeMarino. "When I got the Les Paul Junior from John, it was in its original factory condition"Tobacco Sunburst finish, single P"90 pickup, wraparound tail piece, and Kluson tuners, but he wanted it modified. He didn't know much about guitars. For instance, he wanted a guitar with "humberdincker" pickups in it. Obviously he was referring to humbucker pickups, but he didn't know. He would say, 'I'm a rhythmer, you know? I don't know anything about these things.' I would try to talk him into getting a better sound out of this or that"like, 'Why don't you put these pickups in? You'll get a better sound.' That's when we did his Les Paul Junior, and I put a Charlie Christian pickup in."We put it in the neck position," says DeMarino. "Installing the Charlie Christian pickup involved extensive routing and major modification to the back of the guitar. We left the Gibson P"90 pickup in the guitar and added a toggle switch wired for pickup selection. When I got the guitar back to John he liked the way it sounded."Co-hosting with Mike Douglas John and Yoko co"hosted The Mike Douglas Show on American television, February 14 " 18, 1972. One of Lennon's guests was his hero Chuck Berry. John used his newly modified Tobacco Sunburst Gibson Les Paul Junior with the Charlie Christian pickup when he jammed with the great Chuck Berry as the two performed "Johnny B. Goode" and "Memphis."More LP mods Soon after, DeMarino again received the Les Paul Junior back from Lennon for more modifications. "John liked the way the Junior played and sounded but he thought it didn't stay in tune," DeMarino says. "We talked about it, and I decided to remove the wraparound tailpiece, plug the holes, and install a Gibson Tune"O"Matic bridge with a stop tailpiece. I also took off the old Kluson tuning pegs and put on a new set of tuners. Nobody thought twice about modifying an old guitar in those days. It wasn't like today, where guys are worried about wrecking the value of a vintage guitar. We would just do whatever had to be done to make a guitar function better. And that's what I did with his Les Paul Junior. John also asked me to sand off the Sunburst Finish and put the guitar to bare wood, the mahogany. That's the last I worked on it. I think he liked the guitar because he ended up using it at the big show they did in New York at the Garden."JL at MSG On August 30, 1972 John Lennon used his customized Gibson Les Paul Junior in its new raw wood"modified state during his famous live performance at New York's Madison Square Garden to benefit the One to One Organization, a group that helped mentally retarded children. This is how John Lennon's modified Gibson Les Paul Junior exists to this day. It is part of the Lennon estate and is currently on display at the John Lennon Museum in Japan.Gibson Limited-Edition John Lennon Les Paul Junior Electric Guitar Features:Authentic reproduction of John Lennon's famous Les Paul Includes Charlie Christian pickup in neck position, as preferred by Lennon Mahogany body and 1"piece mahogany neck with long tenon neck joint Limited Edition of 300 worldwide Includes Custom Shop case, Certificate of Authenticity, custom care kit & signed Lennon print by famed artist Allison Lefcort Gibson Limited-Edition John Lennon Les Paul Junior Electric Guitar Includes:Gibson Custom Shop Case, Certificate of Authenticity, And John Lennon print signed By famed artist Allison Lefcort
